Mayfield Claims OU’s Sixth Heisman Trophy
6 for Six!
Mayfield adds the Heisman to his other 2017 awards — AP Player of the Year, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award. He is the first player since the NCAA allowed the creation of athletics scholarships in 1950 to start his football career as a walk-on athlete and go on to win the award. Mayfield is the third Sooners quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy, joining Jason White in 2003 and Sam Bradford in 2008. OU running backs who have claimed the award were Billy Vessels in 1952, Steve Owens in 1969 and Billy Sims in 1978. Sims was in attendance at Saturday’s ceremony.
Mayfield won by a landslide. Ballots were emailed to 870 media personnel across the nation plus 58 Heisman winners and one fan ballot, for a total of 929 electors. Mayfield polled 2,398 points to capture the award over Bryce Love of Stanford (1,300 points), and 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville (793 points).
